Beige G3 + Sonnet Encore ZIF 1ghz will not power on
Posted by: Brooklyn on 2013-11-05 16:59:54
Hello, I just bought the Sonnet Encore 1ghz ZIF processor upgrade for my Beige G3. When I got it I realized I was missing the power cable adapter which will run a power connector directly to the CPU, which is not normally present. I asked the seller and they do not have it(see attached)

The 8 pin power connector on the Sonnet CPU is the same connector as a modern CPU power connector. So I wired up an ATX style power supply in my Beige G3. However I get nothing, no power signs of life at all with the 1ghz ZIF installed.

I also have a 500mhz G4 Sonnet ZIF upgrade, and when I install it with the ATX power supply it works fine. But the 500mhz G4 does not require the CPU power connector either anyway.

So is my upgrade broken? Or is the 8pin connector on the Sonnet not the same as a modern CPU power connector?

Thanks!!!

Just because the connector fits does not mean the wires are used for the same task.

However I do not know how Sonnet had their stuff wired so that is all I can say.

I understand this, does anyone know the pin out? Or could measure for me 🙂

I figured this out, pin outs are completely different. Top row is all ground and bottom rightmost is 12V and remaining 3 bottom pins are 5V. Everything works now with a PC ATX supply I'll post pics later.

Very clean, and that heat sink looks sweet.

If you are into customizing they sell thumb screws that color, for the PCI cards or something else inside.

Here's one ebay auction that has a few for reference http://www.ebay.com/itm/8pcs-Computer-Case-Screws-Color-Screm-Fingertight-Screw-/290996590930?pt=US_Computer_Case_Accessories_Tool_Kits&hash=item43c0bf9952

I hope you have a second HD or partition with OS 9.2.1 on it. A beige G3 with that processor would be a screaming OS 9 system, the 768MB RAM ceiling just makes it a limited OSX machine (along with PCI video).

What happened to the original PS anyway? You can use the Mac supply or ATX just by moving a motherboard jumper but I never seen a reason (power draw) to bother using a beefier ATX one in mine.

Thanks for the mounting screws suggestion, and of course it dual boots 9.2.1 and 10.4.11. Both are on the same drive, you have to hold the option key during startup to boot OS9. 10.4.11 actually boots a lot faster than 9.2.1, but once 9.2.1 is booted it is faster.
