Crescendo G3 NuBus and whacky system bus speeds?
Posted by: Trash80toHP_Mini on 2013-10-25 21:55:30
Looking through LEM, I noticed something curious. The low end Radius System 100 has a slower proc @ 80MHz on a 40MHz bus. The faster 110MHz processor sits on a slower 37MHz bus. Mine is the Radius 81/110, which came only in the 110MHz flavor with the slower 37MHz bus.

Question: Since I'm running a G3 Accelerator and the Proc is idling, if it's running at all, should I overclock the System Bus? 40MHz ought to be a nice kick in the pants for overall performance. [😀] ]'>

Maybe I can push it even harder! [}🙂] ]'>

The max oscillator you can use in the 8100/110 is 45 MHz, to run the processor at 135 MHz.

Since the processor is likely the limiting factor in overclocking the 8100, might it go even higher? AFAIK the G3 Accelerators are asynchronous, so pushing the MoBo higher than 45MHz while the 601 sleeps might test out fine.

Did I mention I've got a backup 81/110 MoBo. ;D

I highly recommend going at least to 40MHz bus. It really does help.

If you're doing a lot of work, you might lower the multiplier on the 601 so you can go to 45, 50, keep pushing and see how far it'll go without the CPU clock being the limit.

That's what I was thinking, do you really think just cranking it up to 40MHz will pep it up significantly?

If I ever get around to doing a DigiKey order, I'll add some crystals for this project to the list . . .

. . . although I've got a variable overclocking setup for the IIfx, hrmmm? }🙂

just try for 45mhz, make sure she stays cool 🙂
