| Leopard on Cube |
Posted by: Rodus on 2013-09-25 06:26:40 I'm trying to put Leopard on my G4 cube with the intent of using it as a headless iTunes player but using the open firmware hack or Leopard Assist I just get a kernel panic on boot. Is there a firmware issue with the Cube where it has to be running the last version and if so which firmware do I need?

Posted by: Gorgonops on 2013-09-25 08:13:34 I know it's a dumb question that probably has an obvious answer relating to iTunes versions or something, but... why Leopard instead of Tiger?

Posted by: Anonymous Freak on 2013-09-25 08:31:13 I'm sure it's iTunes.
I had the same problem trying to install Leopard on my Cube. Although I put an upgraded video card in immediately before trying the install, so it might be lack of video drivers. I haven't yet swapped the stock video card back to try it with stock.

Leopard Assist works pretty well, but you will probably need an original Leopard Disk to get it running.
tried several times with a bad copy, ending up with a KP !!... worked like a charm with the original DVD (several Powermac G4)
So far haven't tried in the Cube, Tiger should be more than enough (Leopard is quite slow on a 450 Mhz G4)

Posted by: haplain on 2013-09-25 15:22:03 I've upgraded sold and rebuilt probably 200 cubes in the past few years. I will NEVER install Leopard on a Cube unless a customer specifically demands it. I've only had problems with that OS and know that the Cube is much faster, more stable and better off staying at 10.4.11. I understand you might be looking for something that iTunes requires 10.5 for, but just my two cents.

Posted by: jongleur on 2013-09-25 16:04:10 Make sure the cube is on firmware version 4.1.9
Have a look at http://www.cubeowner.com/forums/index.php?act=home - the best site for for 'Cube Lovers'
10.5.8 works OK, but 10.4.11 is zippier

Posted by: haplain on 2013-09-25 16:06:34 Your going to need to be able to boot directly into Mac OS 9.0-9.2.2 in order to update your boot rom if that is the case. You cannot "virtualize" install it while running 10.4 and OS classic at the same time. Seeing how you have OS 10.5, which doesn't support OS Classic, you might need to find a way to get that.
