LaserWriter Questions
Posted by: CelGen on 2013-09-22 16:54:04
I'm doing a routine check to see that both my LaserWriter Plus and IIg are behaving fine.

The plus I have never really used because when I got it all the trays were missing. After I got the IIg I tried one of its trays but they were too wide. Where can you still find the proper size paper trays? The printer otherwise seems to go ready if you trick it into thinking a tray is installed.

The IIg however is a bit more cranky. When you turn it on you get that jet-engine spin-up, which promptly stops and the indicators flash the toner light and illuminates the paper tray light. I have a tray loaded with paper and installed and to my knowledge the toner cartridge is healthy so I don't see what's wrong. Is this an alternate error code?

Canon SX printers like the IIg usually fail in two major areas, the fuser, and the AC power supply (along with the occasional pickup roller). Check the fuser first since its cheap and easy to replace: http://www.fixyourownprinter.com/reference/guides/fuser/sx

The printer could also have dirty sensors or loose wires. Check the paper out sensor switch and the toner cartridge contacts. Also re-seat the printer's formatter board.

The fuser looks like it's had a screw or something jammed against part of it as there's a rather nasty gash but would that somehow trigger an error? Otherwise the two resistances referenced in your link are within range of mine. Three of the mounting screws are also oddly missing....

From what I can tell the paper level sensor (black plastic arm that hangs down?) is present and moves freely. Toner contacts also appear in good shape.

Reminds me of my StyleWriter II which complains that there's no cartridge even when there is.

I did a full strip-down and clean-up and it still does it.
