| Bridging internet to local talk |
Posted by: oldmacs on 2013-08-03 16:48:07 Hi All,
I'd like to share the internet connection (Ethernet) to some Macs on a local talk network. My Centris 650 has an ethernet card and I would use this Mac as the host. Anyone have any idea how to do this? The other Macs are a collection of LCs and the occasional Powerbook.

Posted by: NJRoadfan on 2013-08-03 19:53:59 Its rumored that Apple's Localtalk Bridge can route TCP/IP over Localtalk if installed on a machine with Open Transport 1.1.2 or later installed: http://lowendmac.com/tech/ip_on_localtalk.shtml
Information on installing Localtalk Bridge with download link: http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1258
If Localtalk Bridge doesn't work, IPNetRouter will do the job, but is commercial software: http://www.sustworks.com/site/prod_ipr_overview.html
Apple also sold a product called "Apple IP Gateway" but it is no longer available.

To toss in my two cents...I use an LC III because of its small size and low power consumption. If you're not leaving it on 24/7, or just aren't too worried about electricity usage, then this isn't too big of a deal. (This is assuming you've got/are willing to get an ethernet card to use in it.) The Centris 650 will certainly do the job just fine too, of course. As you can see from Apple's LocalTalk Bridge page, it doesn't exactly have very demanding system requirements.
Have fun!

Posted by: Aoresteen on 2013-08-04 11:11:31 You can also use a Shiva Netbridge. BAck in the day Shiva was a big player in AppleTalk bridges. I have one factory sealed that will be on the auction site this week.

My solution is currently a Shiva Fastpath box. The older ones can be tricky to configure. I'll eventually get around to making a guide.

Posted by: techknight on 2013-08-04 21:21:47 IPNetRouter was released for free. That will work, my old and long gone quadra950 sat as a bridge between the two.

Posted by: oldmacs on 2013-08-05 04:27:49 Hi all thanks for the help 🙂
I'll try the IPNetRouter. I would put it in my LC 475 but I don't yet have an ethernet card for it- My Centris is my only Mac with an ethernet card and local talk at the moment.

IPNetRouter was released for free. That will work, my old and long gone quadra950 sat as a bridge between the two. When? There is no note on there site indicating as such. I haven't tried them yet, but are the downloads unlocked and not time limited?

Posted by: PowerPup on 2013-08-05 11:45:07 Sustainable Softworks gave out a free 1 user license for IPNetRouter's 10th birthday. They still provide downloads for both PPC and 68k on their site. 😉

Posted by: techknight on 2013-08-05 17:13:33 Yea, they released it for free for non commercial usage. except X was still paid.

Posted by: oldmacs on 2013-08-10 07:26:44 I can't get either local talk bridge or the other one to load. Even if I use that registration code it says that it is not correct 🙁

This is a simple way of connecting your old Mac to the Internet.
