Apple II games
Posted by: TheEisenfaust on 2013-04-09 13:04:29
I've got an Apple IIGS, and I've been really wanting to game on it, my only problem is my limited software selection. I found a website online that allows you to play Apple II games on an Apple IIe by plugging an iPhone/iPad into the cassette port on it and pressing a key combo on your IIe, then hitting play on the iPhone/iPad. I WANNA DO THAT!!! The problem is that since I have an Apple IIGS, I don't think I'm able to do that without an adapter or interface card... Thoughts?

How do you want to expand your software collection? What disk drives have you?

1. Use the (original) serial version: http://sourceforge.net/projects/a2gameserver/

2. Play games online: http://virtualapple.org/

3. Make and use physical floppy disks: http://adtpro.sourceforge.net

Go here: http://adtpro.sourceforge.net/ and download a copy of ADTPro and then either make yourself a cable to run between your modern computer and the GS or order one from here: http://retrofloppy.com/products.html and you'll be able to transfer Apple II disk images that you can find online, such as here: ftp://ftp.apple.asimov.net/pub/apple_II/ or here: http://www.whatisthe2gs.apple2.org.za/ ore here: http://macgui.com/downloads/?cat_id=53, back to real disks to run on the GS. Another option would be something like this: http://dreher.net/?s=projects/CFforAppleII&c=projects/CFforAppleII/main.php that you can install in the GS and then use either CF cards or Flash Drives to run the old Apple II game disk images from.

Hope this helps.

@magnusfalkirk Dude... You have officially made my day. Soon as I get paid, I'm making this happen! I've seen the CF card for Apple II, but since he hasn't made more of them I have no idea how much they cost... I'd love to get my hands on one though! I'd be able to finally install GS/OS 6! Thanks for all the info by the way. I really appreciate it.

ADT Pro rocks. Keep in mind that most of those CF cards work as prodos volumes while most of the classic games are floppy booters and need either a real floppy drive or something that emulates one.

james1095,

that's the beauty of the CFFA3000, it will mount 5.25 or 3.5 or HD images on your Apple //. The computer sees the images as a physical floppy so you can play games or do whatever you would with the real disk without having to transfer the image back to real disk. There are times where a real disk is better but I really like the CFFA3000 and wouldn't trade it for anything.
