Came with the rack mount hardware and cables.
Not sure what I'm going to do with it as I don't have a fibre channel card yet.

I love the vertical orientation! Build an upright rack to hold that and an X-Serve behind a glass door for an Uber-TOWER! }🙂

Posted by: Cory5412 on 2013-02-15 19:32:07 Nice. Not exactly a monster of capacity, woefully enough there are 4TB USB 3 disks that may even be faster than this (and of course there's the wd velociraptor duo that connects via Thunderbolt), but if you can get suitable PATA to SATA adapters at a reasonable price, or build a new backplane... there's a lot of opportunity there.
If you want to run it in tower orientation, you may consider something like this: http://www.xrackpro.com/XtroVERT-Xserve-RAID-Stand-s/2.htm
Marathon Computer (the company that made iMac and PowerMacintosh G3/G4 rack mounting kits) used to make a pair of classy feet for using xserves and xserve raids vertically, but they seem to be defunct now.
Tangent: Vertical/tower disk arrays are one of the things I often feel is missing from server vendors these days. Ah well, I am probably one of the few folks who would like a vertical/tower version of the HP D2600 or Dell PowerVault MD1000/MD1200.

Posted by: Cory5412 on 2013-02-16 11:53:36 This is probably faster anyway.
I'd see about gutting it and putting sata expander hardware in it. Having a place to put fourteen modern SATA disks would be great.

Posted by: Cosmo on 2013-02-17 09:50:30 Saw one similar setup here asking 400€ for it. It came with Xserve Intel + XRAID + fibre card/cable. But the insanity of the noise made me skip it.
Do you have good location for it if you're running it full with disks? Those will generate loud...noise.

Posted by: waynestewart on 2013-02-18 21:06:45 I'm probably not going to use the XRAID. In fact I may have a possible swap in the works. Some drive trays for a dual 1.33 G4 xserve. I'll see what happens.
I'm using a number of 3tb external drives and I have a number of 1 & 2tb Lacie Quadras gathering dust. I may set the 2tb as software RAIDed drives. Wish those Lacie cases would take more than a 2tb HD.

Posted by: bd1308 on 2013-02-26 10:22:01 By chance if you have any extra drive trays available please PM me. I have a G4 XServe project (liquid-cooling) that is waiting for drive trays.
