I am just going to talk about hardware, no software.

Here is what I got, and how much it cost.

Some of the guys on here said,

don't waste your money and don't waste your time.

i figured i would try it , only because it might be fun.

and if it doesn't work, might make an ok Windows 8 box for the wife 🙂

Pretty sane thought process right?

Built myself the Mac Pro's "Special cousin" in-bred clone:

It runs a dual core i3 2100 $87

Gigabyte GA-Z68MA-D2H-B3 board $89

4GB AMD PC3-8500 (2x 2GB) $23

Sapphire Radeon 6670 1GB $78

and then I got a locally-designed Devanni Nitrous Case for $60 on craigslist

Pulled out my RocketRAID 2300 4-port SATA RAID card

and put in 3x 1TB Hitachi Ultrastars (Got three for $30/pc or $90 altogether)

Threw in a 2TB WD Green drive I had lying around, a 430Watt Antec TruePower Trio and 2 on-hand DVD-+RW DL drives

10.7.5 runs great. I also uploaded a video on youtube where I showed how to setup the RAID for boot. So it's booting from the RAID-0 (Striped) and is super fast. The HDD in RAID maxes almost at 200MB/s

ok i got all the hardware in my case here,

Got the thumb drive made, pretty much all you need is 3 things, proper DSDT.aml file for your Model and bios rev.

then you need a image of the os, then all you need is the boot loader.

so you image the thumbdrive as if its a hd, then run the loader , it makes your thumb drive bootable and adds that custom DSDT.aml file,

with in this file is everything that needs to be patched, so your hardware works properly with the os.

then pop in thumb drive, set it as boot, install os on HD ... and wala done. it really is that easy.

then run apple software update.

I would really want to take a laptop or mobile board (something with small, quiet fans) and make a flat compact using just the front bezel from a Classic. I'm still turning that one around in my head.

For a full desktop board, I don't have many ideas at this point. I have an empty IIsi case around here. It would fit in that.

One of those Intel NUC platforms would be ever better - Pico ITX is just too expensive and slow (they're mostly all VIA CPUs). But I like the idea, kind of like a flat panel Classic 🙂

yeah the loader is fully 10.8 working.. i just do not have a 10.8 image at the moment.

I've had my eye on using the Apple Powered Speakers as the model for the back/base of a FlatClassic. The stepdown at the top helps and the curved sides fit in nicely with the curve of the front bezel. The flat back and minimal depth would be about perfect. Ballast it with the PSU at the bottom and build it just deep enough for a Laptop DVD and I think you'd have a winner on your hands. [😉] ]'>
