System 7 and Old B&W Games
Posted by: Tempest on 2013-01-04 08:34:11
Does anyone have experience with trying to run older B&W games that were made for System 6 and earlier on System 7? Specifically on an LC 575? I'm looking to consolidate my Apple collection by getting an LC all in one with an Apple IIe card, but I'm worried that older Mac games are going to break on System 7 and the faster processor.

Is there a list of the more popular games that don't like System 7? I'm mostly interested in hearing about RPGs and Adventure games.

I've tried a few (Dark Castle, Wizardry VI, Taskmaker, Crystal Quest, etc.) and they run fine. Some games like Wizardry require you to turn off 32-bit memory addressing. Some don't care. Since an LC is limited to 10MBs of physical RAM anyway, you probably don't need 32-bit turned on. Also, I think the IIe card needs 24-bit memory addressing, so that'll work out fine.

He's using a 575 so I think he may have to switch between the two modes depending on the situation.

From my experience, a lot of them have worked fine. (text adventures, Falcon, Harpoon, Crystal Quest, Uninvited, Deja Vu) I think the only one that crashed on me upon startup was Shadowgate.

I'm a bit worried about speed issues with the 040 in the 575. I've already had some with the 030 in the SE/30.

Speed issue-wise, it'll probably be similar. I do know that Arkanoid now doesn't seem to like my IIci, but did earlier, when I was running an 80MB drive out of another ci, instead of the 250 that's in it now. Both drives have 7.5.5 on'em. Arkanoid runs fine on my SE/30, though.
