| Treat Your self! Dougg3's ROM's (SE/30-IIx-IIcx-IIci-IIsi) |
Posted by: uniserver on 2012-12-26 18:44:19 I get zero commission,

(Installed in a Macintosh IIci)
These are the following Machines this ROM Simm Works with:
Macintosh IIx
Macintosh IIcx
Macintosh IIci
Macintosh IIsi
Macintosh SE/30

Getting one of these simms opens your mac up to a whole bunch of really cool new things.
Dougg3 sells the programmer and the 8mb simm, so you can customize your simm any way you want it,
bbraun is the guy that makes the image/sw for the ROM SIMM
Other people's work also went into this project so from here on out I will refer to this as the New ROM Simm.
Here is some of the benefits:
IIx - IIcx - SE/30 These machines all have DIRTY Roms, and they require MODE32 Software to be installed in order to address anything above 8mb ram. The New ROM simm is 32Bit clean, no MODE32 software needed.
Large Amounts of ram make your mac stall at boot, behind the scene its doing a memory check, more the memory, the longer it stalls for, all the way up to 128 megs of ram. This New Rom Simm will disable annoying memory checking.
Boot an OS From ROM? Watch -->
Many many more things you can do!

Posted by: PowerPup on 2012-12-26 20:32:00 Technically this would be something you'd post on a blog, as most people on the forum already know about dougg3's project. You should also post a link to the original topic so people can look at the conversation themselves. (That way you're not drawing attention away from dougg3's topic.)

Posted by: uniserver on 2012-12-26 22:13:16 Oh really, That's nice that you think I should post this on a blog.
Nobody except people on here would know what the heck it is,
Think of this thread as more of the marketing thread for this Rom Simm,
and the other thread as more of a Engineering thread, Different places for different kinds of people.

Posted by: mcdermd on 2012-12-27 00:02:12 Here's a question - how do you make your own ROMs with this? I realize the hardware exists but how do you go about packaging your own custom ROM image?
|
Posted by: Trash80toHP_Mini on 2012-12-27 07:38:04 That's probably something best discussed over on another site.
That is the kind of thing we don't allow here due to copyright issues. These great Hardware/Software/Firmware hacks are a wonderful development, but only reverse engineering the firmware, development processes for the hardware and drivers and the their general use are covered here at the barracks.

Think of this thread as more of the marketing thread for this Rom Simm, and the other thread as more of a Engineering thread, Different places for different kinds of people. He has a bit of a point, the lounge pretty much is a Blog and the place for promoting something you're so enthusiastic about. It has done wonders for your SE/Toaster, so put that link into your next reply.
Meanwhile, we'll see about moving one of your posts into the lounge where it does belong this time! ๐

Posted by: onlyonemac on 2012-12-27 08:29:43 Does it work in a Performa 475 (or can the SIMM be modified to do so)?
|
Posted by: Trash80toHP_Mini on 2012-12-27 08:54:55 Modify? :-*
< /snark >
I have a feeling we'll find that out very soon, I just looked at my Microquadra MoBos and one of the Q605 pair has the ROM SIMM thru-holes populated! 8-o
So, despite my snark, cleaning the solder out of the thru-holes and installing a SIMM Socket in your 475 can be considered a factory option package refit.
|
Posted by: onlyonemac on 2012-12-27 08:57:17 I mean modify the SIMM, not the Mac 8-o .
|
Posted by: mcdermd on 2012-12-27 09:04:38 Modifying the SIMM is the entire idea of the project.
|
Posted by: onlyonemac on 2012-12-27 09:10:44 Then why are we:
cleaning the solder out of the thru-holes and installing a SIMM Socket ? |

As jt said, (unless your 475 is different) There is Rom Simm spot on the mainboard pcb, but the actual rom simm slot is missing.
unless you have a special LB, OOM.
Also yes it would require much more modification, The q700 also has a Rom Simm Slot. but this kind of info would be much better in the original ( engineering thread, if you are trying to motivate the one that have the abilities to do what you are talking about.
(Dougg3's original thread) Regarding all the steps that were taken, to achieve current ROM's success.

Mcdermd just shot this image of the LC475 LB.

Posted by: Trash80toHP_Mini on 2012-12-27 09:24:54 Check the empty(?) pads/thru-holes betwixt VRAM and the soldered RAM. If empty, the only way to use the ROM SIMM is to install the socket where Apple must have decided it wasn't necessary to do so after the early production unit ROMs field tested well.
Now to look at my MoBo for the spot, Apple placed a select/de-select option for the ROM SIMM on this (assumedly) early production unit. :approve:
The header at J18 is for 605/475 Gestalt ID selection, correct?
edit: beat me again, uni!
p.s. Does anyone else have a 605/475/AIO equivalent with the factory installed ROM SIMM Socket?

Posted by: uniserver on 2012-12-27 10:54:54 I don't know of a ROM Simm Enable jumper LC475/Q605, such as on the IIcx,IIci,IIsi.
However I am sure there is a way, even if its a 000 Ohm resister somewhere, VS a jumper, I could live with that!

Further discussion of this hack should take place in the ROM_SIMM_Connector_Retrofittin' =8-D thread.
This thread is heading to the lounge, due to its unrequested _______________ nature . . .
< . . . can't think of the exact word offhand . . . :๐ >
