PowerBook 190CS OS oddities
Posted by: Macdrone on 2012-12-05 00:05:39
So I get this 190 minus hard drive says it doesn't boot. Quickly I plug it in and bong boot to question mark. So I grab an old iBook drive strap it in, put in a 7.5 floppy and it says I need something newer. Ok fine, grab my 7.6 disk tools. Disk 1 says PowerPC, upgrade or 040 with IDE drive. Well that's this machine so I put it in and it says not power pc restart. So I try disk tools 2 which says 020,030 or 040 with scsi of coarse no go because its IDE. So I pull out 7.6.1 on cd and hook it up and starts to boot bam sad Mac. So I pull out 8 on cd bam boots and is installing. I'll add more later but wow how weird I thought.

You need the disk tools floppy from OS8 to boot the PB 190. From there you can install OS 7.5.3 from an external CDRom for example.

This one contains the powerbook 190 enabler required to boot the machine.

A boot disk with os 7.5.3 and manually add the PB190 enabler will work too.

7.5.3 is original with enabler would be fine but why didn't 7.6.1 cd rom work? Floppies I get no enabler even tho its 7.6.1, but probably stripped down 7.5. The 8.1 worked so I'm guessing 7.5.5 system or 7.6. Ill live with 8.1. I have 2 190's so no biggie. Soon I need to try and recap the screen on my 160 as external video works but screen has backlight but no screen showing.

I think I have saved somewhere the backup disk images for the 190/5300/2300. It is System 7.5.2. There should be a disk tools boot disk with it. I could see about posting that if it helps.

That would be outstanding. Thank you.

Its ok, no rush I know it works but the original disk software is always cool.

Posted!

https://dl.dropbox.com/u/2105208/PowerBook%20190disks.zip

Note: 27mb download

The zip contains a collection of disk images, all the restore software of the 190. It should also work on 2300c/5300 series. it includes Apple Remote access, PowerBook extras, PowerTalk, QuickDraw GX and WordScript.

The PowerBook Extras is kind of neat because it has stuff like Erics solitare sampler, spin doctor, super maze wars, disk image mounter, etc.

naryasece: Better be careful with this! The people in charge here will probably this link sooner or later, citing copyright infringement.

Better get it while I still can!! 🙂

Ah you bring up a good point. I thought that the software would only be relevant to users of the 190/2300/5300 and I hoped that the licence for the software would be tied to the machine. I'll keep it up for the rest of today and take it down 😛

Happy holidays!
