Performa 550
Posted by: Secret Chimp on 2012-12-01 14:25:27
I just picked up a Performa 550 off of Craigslist. They thought it was dead, but I helped them test it out (i.e. the power switch doesn't actually turn it on) and found out it just has a bad hard drive.

I picked it up for $75 - too much? I dunno. I put in another drive and it boots up fine, inside is hardly dusty at all, outside is in good shape. I never thought I'd see one of these things again so it's worth it to me. After I find a bigger drive I'm going to get it set up like I had my Performa 630CD as a kid - I have a lot of old CD-ROM Today and MacAddict CDs to go through! I also want to get my 4 year old playing with some KidPix.

This is kind of a mundane model, but it's exciting for me since it's my first non-portable classic Mac score since my dad gave away my small (and also mundane) collection several years ago when our old house was sold.

You must be near Tacoma. I was gonna pick it up for 50 because of the drive but couldn't make it. Want to trade it for the 575 version? I have 2 575s but need a 550 for testing color classic stuff. I could slide you a 630cd with a 6200 motherboard also.

Sure, that'd be awesome. I live up in the Bothell area, I just made the trip for funsies.

Congrats! It looks to be in great shape. I'm a big fan of all in ones.

Do you care too much about case yellow? The 575 (which is th same as the Apple TV and same form factor as the 550) plastic is yellow but works like a champ. Hard drive and all works great. Maybe next weekend I can head that way? What OS you want? Want after dark on it?

Yellowing is no problem, I don't mind mixing up a batch of RetroBright. Next weekend would be good, I'm out for half of next week on business.

If it has some extra RAM in it I'll give 8.1 a try, otherwise I'll go with 7.5.5. Do you happen to have a PDS Ethernet card that would fit this thing?

I sure don't. Been looking for them myself.

They're on eBay for 15 to 30 dollars, just no guessing if they still work or not.
