| Internal SCSI ZIP 100, as Main (Hard Drive) For Vintage Mac |

ok, so far these vintage computers now have Internal 100mb SCSI Zip Drive in place of the hard drive:
LC-III
LC-II
IIci
Mac SE
Also I have a Internal SCSI Zip Drive, Installed in a Club Mac external inclosure,
I have been booting different mac's and different os'es for months and months with this.
IT's been working great.
Over all I would have to say this solutions seems to work pretty well,
The performance is similar to the 40mb/80mb SCSI hard drives.
If you require pictures to see how i've installed them i would be more then happy to provide!
just would have to take them 🙂
So far here is what I think would be the benefits to using this mac booting method:
- Internal SCSI Zip drive only uses about 500ma of power
- If some how you wear out the Disk you are using, pop another in
- Maybe you have some laying around already?
- Zip 100 disks seem to still be easy and cheap to come by
- It will dimensionally fit in the same spot the old hd was in.
- it will still boot and work with out the IOMEGA Extension. But the extension does make it more speedy R/W access.

Can this be done in a plus? I use zips for pc-g4-g3 transfer and that would be a nice stealthy mod. However if not I'm going to stick to the plan of the external scsi zip100. :b&w:

I think the only thing you have to worry about is keeping the zip disk from ejecting each time you shut down.

Yes, I roll up a bumper with electrical tape, and then use some more electrical tape to hold the disk in with the bumper.

Hi,
I've found that if you format a ZIP disk with the patched Apple HD SC Setup 7.3.5, the computer will see it as a fixed disk and will not eject it from the drive on restart or shutdown (although you can still eject it manually after dragging it's icon to the trash while booted from another disk).
Absolutely no hardware hacking required!

patched Apple HD setup? Yes. You have to get it separately, though. You can do this either by attaining the patch and applying it to the regular version, or you can get the pre-patched version.
And to elaborate a little on Bunsen's answer: Yes, a Zip100 disk will work in a Zip 250 drive, except that it will operate more slowly than a Zip250 disk would in the same drive. There may be a few unforeseen reliability problems, too, but I don't really have much experience in that regard (I always use Zip100 disks in a Zip100 drive).
Also, this only works on SCSI Zip drives, as far as I know.

I know the Iomega drivers have a setting which allows you to disable eject on shutdown/restart.

Thanks Bunsen and CC_333, I never thought to try it, I just know when a 250 was in a 100 case and I accidently popped it in the 100 drive it just shot out didnt even go in all the way. Which reminds me, I need to find a surplus of 100's. 😱)
