7100 Video

Hi 68K'ers! 🙂

I'm sorting through my collection, which I haven't had time for in years. I'm looking at one particular machine, my PowerMac 7100/80.

I acquired this one about 5-6 years ago from a city government auction. It was missing the hard drive but otherwise complete. I've since added a 700MB Quantum.

Anyhow - this thing has the (decidedly bizarre) HDI45 video connector on the logic board. It also has an Apple PDS video card, and NuBus Radius "8-bit video accelerator" card. I normally want my systems to be as complete as they can be, so it bothers me that I can't use that HDI45 port since I have no adapter or native monitor. But -- am I right in thinking that the on-board video would be slower than the two add-in cards (both of which have a normal DB-15 connector)? I'm assuming the on-board video uses shared RAM as well. If that's the case, I will resolve to happily ignore the giant HDI45.

Yeah, the built-in DRAM video sucks memory off of the DRAM. If you really want the adapter, I think there were a couple in a bucket at the weekly university surplus sale I could pick up for you.

I second ignoring the inboard video. I have a dongle if you need one but the difference is see able between the two.

Agreed, the adapter really isn't worth the cost of admission, I'd go with the standard db15 output.

Great then, thanks everyone for your input!

I'll just use the video cards and ignore the on-board video. Thanks for the offers to find the adapter for me though, much appreciated. :approve:

The 7100 shares its architecture with the 6100, which is documented in incredible detail at http://kan.org/6100 . You will find just about everything you could ever wish to know about video for those machines there.
