Normally, wether the hard disk is working or not, it does the usual startup chime. Then, about a week ago, I noticed a strange, very feint hissing noise coming from the speaker. I don't know for how long it had been doing this. Then, yesterday (or maybe the day before), I had tried to boot it about 10-20 times. One time, never before, and not again for a while, it went:
boo-eep a bit like an airport anouncement. It did it straight after power on, right before the chime (it still chimed).
Today, it did it again twice (not twice in a row, but fairly close together). It always makes exactly the same beep.
Why is this? I know macs should never beep on startup. Only disrespectful :disapprove: PCs do that! So why did it do this?
It's not a problem as such, I'm just intrested as to why it does it and what it means.
| Posted by: Concorde1993 on 2012-07-12 11:52:25 Sometimes when I power up my 5215CD, it makes a very loud beep (almost sounds like a siren going off), but it only happens if the computer has been idle (not used) for a long period of time, or if it wasn't shut down correctly.
I'm not sure why it does this, but my suspicion is a faulty chip on the motherboard, or possibly (although I really doubt this) capacitors. If I ever catch it, I'll record it, and post it on Youtube.
| Posted by: uniserver on 2012-07-12 12:03:34 its because spiceyokodo has placed a HEX on your mac 😛
| Posted by: spiceyokooko on 2012-07-12 12:06:46 It seems I'm not allowed to comment!
But it's interesting someone else suggested the dreaded C word! Capacitors that is!

If you don't want people to comment on them, then do not post them.
| Posted by: onlyonemac on 2012-08-17 09:11:50 Sorry, mods. I didn't mean that spiceyokodo was not allowed to post about the present matter, I simply didn't want the same thing has happened here:

But he offered you a free hd? and free ram to if he could find it! I know that, but I had to turn them down due to other private complications. I told him that they were much appriciated anyway.
| Posted by: onlyonemac on 2012-09-10 09:06:05 A few weeks ago I found out what was causing it. It was the beginning of the "chimes of death" sequence.
Some macs play just the four chimes, but some, like the Performa 475, play an arpegio first, then the four chimes. So, what it was doing, was that it started by playing the arpegio, but that was then interupted with the normal bong. It's strange why it was doing this.
But, eventually, a few weeks ago, it stopped bonging, and played the death chimes to the end xx( . It was then that I decided to recap. It was also then that I discovered what it was doing, as the sound seemed familiar, but continued to its dreadful end.
| Posted by: Papichulo on 2020-09-17 06:12:30 well the beeping could of been a secret bomb inside the performa. could also be the speaker
