Powermac G4- Internet works, but not updates!
Posted by: Theretrogamingroom on 2012-07-09 20:20:27
I am trying to get my Powermac G4 (1x500) to update, but it always gives me a 1001 error. I recently installed a larger Hard Drive, a 120GB Western Digital WD1200. I doubt that this has anything to do with the issues, although it is the only difference between getting updates and not getting updates. Plus, I know it isn't the Powermac, as I installed another hard drive from another mac and it did updates just fine, so my Ethernet port is working.

Any ideas where the problems might be?

Thanks!

What OS is running on there? Are you trying to update just the OS, or all of the Apple software? Archives of older Mac software have gotten more difficult to track down, but I'd start with locating a complete update image for my OS version and keep it handy for future use. For example for OS 10.4 I'd get the dmg which updates anything from 10.4.0 to 10.4.10 to 10.4.11. Personally I don't trust to update anything crucial over the net anyway.

I am running 10.3 and I need to update to at least 10.3.4 (Preferably 10.3.9) for iLife which I have been trying to install.

Just do what I do - hop on Apple's website and grab the 10.3.9 Combo updater...that'll get you to 10.3.9 in one step, from there you can run Software Update and update the other parts (iTunes, etc). Also make sure your date is right - from memory Software Update won't work properly if your date isn't accurate.

Still won't update even with the correct date and 10.3.9 installed.

Can I just get the other updates off of the internet like I did with the OS upgrade?

I download all my updates that way. It means I've got a copy to use on other machines without downloading again via update.

Rumours are circulating that Apple has taken off all updates from Software Update other than 10.4 and up (one list I read noted that 10.2, for example, could not fetch updates suddenly). You can still download the security updates manually.

I don't know if this applies to OS 9, though I wouldn't be surprised.
