LC III power outage woes
Posted by: sgraem on 2012-06-18 22:52:19
Hello,

My LC has acted up over the years, and I've been able to get him back in line, but now I'm stumped. Today I had 2 power outages, both within an hour. The first one lasted about 5 seconds or so, and he booted back up once the power came on. After about 10 minutes of using him, the power went out again, this time for good. I gave up and flipped him off once the power was out. When the power came back on and I started him, it seems as though the clock battery died, even though replacing it did not help (no video, no chime, just fan and hard drive spin up). I distinctly recall a previous issue like this, but I can't remember what I did to fix it. I hate to ask, but is all lost? Without the chime, I can't zap the PRAM or do any other startup keyboard commands. Please help. Thanks.

EDIT: By the way, on my logic board, there are two solder pads that say RESET next to them. If I bridge them with some wire, would it work like a CUDA reset? Also, try as I might, the quick flip power trick does not seem to work on him, no matter what I do.

If there is no startup chime, I suspect bad capacitors. I have one like this too, sometimes it will work if I fiddle with it enough. I've had some superstitious luck by removing the pram battery and shorting the terminals in the battery holder for a few seconds. (That probably doesn't make a difference, but why not try I guess.)

If it's capacitor-related, you could try washing your logic board, that could probably help. Search this forum for some good info and tips on washing your logic board.

:O I don't know how, but through some voodoo ritual involving copious amounts of rubbing alcohol, HE'S ALIVE! 😀 The only issue now is that the "sound" of the computer dips slightly when powering on the monitor during a cold boot, but that can be fixed with a battery swap (I tried an older purchased one from my G4 MDD). Thanks a bunch! May my macintosh live its golden years peacefully. 🙂
