Suitable replacements for MR824 diodes/value of replacing diodes on compact analog boards?
Posted by: DragonKid on 2015-08-22 22:45:57
The MR824 diode that is a recommended replacement for the GI854s used at CR1 and CR5 on compact Mac analog boards appears to be discontinued, does anyone here know of a suitable replacement?  To me it looks like Vishay EGP50G-E3/54 might be a suitable replacement (see datasheet at http://www.vishay.com/docs/88585/egp50a.pdf), the only big difference I see is that the temperature range on the Vishay part is -65 to +150 C instead of -65 to +175 C.

And on that note, I know several sources recommend replacing a bunch of diodes on Mac analog boards.  I'm repairing a Mac 512k that had a shorted flyback.  After replacing the FBT the video is fine, but I was planning to replace some electrolytic caps as well as the RIFA manufactured across-line cap since I know those are infamous for blasting brown goo all over the board with age.  Does it make sense to go ahead and change these diodes out as well?  I don't usually replace diodes, transistors, ICs, etc. unless they're actually defective.

how has noone replied to this thread in almost 3 years? I am myself looking for a suitable replacement. I bought some 1N4937 Diodes, which would be sutable to replace CR9, CR10, And CR27  but I am still looking for something for CR1 and CR5...

Only way its ever going to happen is if you/someone figures it out. you get the original specs, and find a substitute with similar and/or better specs and change them out. Thats how its done.

I still have MR824s.   Shipping will be a pain though.  You ought to be able to drop them in a $.50 postage envelop, but they're too thick and the post office has gotten really OCD about package dimensions.   I suspect that anything classified as a letter is going through high speed automated sorters, and if it's too thick, it either is crushed (a few people have received crushed axial caps) or it clogs the machine.

If you're already ordering capacitors for a logic board that needs them (something newer than Plus or SE) you can add MR824s to that order.

Also seems like I still see them on Ebay sometimes.

I have used these to replace MR824.

Also, when I search for MR824 diodes I find them still available from various suppliers.
