| Macintosh 550 motherboard capacitors |

Hello,
Picked up a Performa 550 recently, I was told the capacitors have been replaced however there appears to be one that leaked or is leaking. Do these capacitors look like replacements or original?

Also, how do you remove the "cage" that keeps the CMOS battery inside?

Half of those are old half are newer. I'd replace them all again, not that expensive.
Thin flat screwdriver on each inside edge or use a finger nail to pick each side off.

I do the rock back and forth removal... Usually I'll take a wire clipper and squeeze an SMD so you can rock it back and forth pretty good.. and eventually it will break off... Using a flat screwdriver or picking them off will pull up the solder pad...
Just rock the cap back and forth and it will break off... if one side breaks before the other DONT PULL (you'll lift the pad).. keep rocking as if one side was connected until it breaks..

And those caps ALL look original to me.... do the rock back and forth and remove the old caps.. You will then need a soldering iron to remove the left over legs from the solder pads of the old caps.. Then clean the board with some rubbing alcohol (91%) from the pharmacy... I use a toothbrush to get in the small areas and scrub it out of the legs of chips... but I soak it down with the alcohol, scrub with tooth brush and do a final alcohol wash.. and then put in front of a blowing small heater.. (not too close) and let it dry it off for a bit.. the alcohol will evaporate... Usually I will shake the board in the tub to get the majority of the alcohol off first... It's good to wash the board down and get all the residue off..

And if you'd prefer to have someone else do it there are a bunch on here who will happily recap the board for you. uniserver comes highly recommended; he's recapped many many boards for me (as well as a lot of other people here) and I have nothing but good things to say.

I'm thinking about having all the capacitors replaced. I was able to replace the battery. I replaced the 8mb RAM stick with a 32mb, and added the co-processor, but now I get a "type 1" error, so I'll have to figure out which part is causing the issue.

Type 1 error usually was incompatible ram, but with bad caps your chasing problems you may not have.
