It's been a while since I posted - life has been busy. I recently visited my parents and found our old Mac LC and a Mac Classic languishing in a closet and garage. The Classic was non-functional. Of course, a capacitor replacement across both boards did the trick, though I was down one capacitor, so I eventually get the joy of going back in there to swap that one out.
I didn't even bother booting the LC before replacing capacitors on both the motherboard and TDK power supply. As you might expect, the PSU looked pretty hideous - a lot of leakage with those cheap caps in there. Happy to report that the LC also booted perfectly well. There are few things more satisfying than bringing these old Macs back to life. Of course, a friend's response was: 'What could you possibly hope to do with that now that you've got it working?' Sigh...
