Want to get a Mac II. IIci? 700? Something else?
Posted by: joethezombie on 2015-08-14 19:58:33
So after finding that old 128k Macintosh, I have found a new passion for these old Apple computers.  I dug out my old Apple IIgs, and even got a ribbon for the ImageWriter II and got the growling beastie working again!  I would really like to get a Macintosh II class machine to "complete" my collection.  I was thinking about a IIci or a Quadra 700.  I like the style of these compact cases.  What do you guys think?

IIci or Quadra 700?  Why choose?  I had to get both!   😉

Actually, one nice thing with the Q700 is you won't have to get it re-capped; they were manufactured with the tantalum caps IIRC.

Quadras are more reliable for sure, but they typically have a price premium over the Two Cee Eye.

Certainly nothing in collectable condition. Maybe for certain internal parts.

If only I didn't live in the UK - shipping costs on a Q700 is a pain, but it remains one of the elusive ones I'm holding out for. Shhh, my wife can't know...

I agree in a way. Then again, shipping EU to US is dirt cheap and twice as fast when compared to the USPS. 🙂

Thanks for the heads up, Uni!

I auiditioned the Quadra 700 and even gave it a 8.1 booting 700MB Quantum Trailblazer and a System 6.0.4/6.0.8/7.1 IIci (7.1 only used for the few things I can't get System 6 to do like AppleTalk routing) crushed it because of this little thing called...System 6! If you want System 6, you have to pay for it (as I did.) But you can get the equivalent of an Apple Display Card 8*24 using the Quadra with fully expanded VRAM, it's not equivalent to the GC because they say it is not accelerated, but has the same VRAM when maxed out (2MB according to my research.)

Then again, you pay for that convenience with only 68MB max system memory, thus meaning the Quadra 700 is as limited in that capacity as the lonesome loser IIvx! I mention this for feature completeness, not disparagement. 😉

System 6, 128MB RAM, and 3 plus 1 (instead of 1 and 2 halves) expansion slots sold me on the IIci-and it quickly got recapped @ that. Although you DO have to pay the DayStar Turbo040 toll with the IIci vs. the Quadra 700 if you want Quadra-level performance (a Radius Rocket would do other tasks, but the main system would b held to 25MHz 68030.)
