LaTeX editor on classic MacOS
Posted by: beachycove on 2012-03-23 21:42:39 Does anyone have any idea of what the best text editor or similar might be for working with LaTeX files on a classic Mac, whether 68k or PPC? I know there are limitations imposed by the OS (like no Unicode), but what can be done within those limitations? I am not talking about compiling here, which would best be done elsewhere, but about content creation, and the ability both to code with the small graces that LaTeX ideally requires (coloured text for commands, etc.), but then also to work with and manipulate large quantities of ASCII text powerfully and flexibly. I am thinking probably that BBEdit is the tool of choice, but are there viable alternatives like, maybe, MPW? Or is there something else that I could look into?
Posted by: MidnightCommando on 2012-03-26 14:27:36 I'm biased here, but - GNU Emacs had an OS 9 port for some time. The auctex and tex modes should work perfectly well in it, given that LaTeX has been around for quite some time - you should be able to find usable versions. Otherwise, I recall a specific Mac TeX distribution, I think called OZTeX? I believe that had very tight integration with BBEdit.

I'm running Mac Emacs 1.17 (7.1.1 on SE/30) which actually has a latex-mode built in. Perfect. Now where do you actually get LaTeX for said classic mac?
