repairing the 5300
Posted by: bibilit on 2012-03-04 05:39:40
A couple of years ago i part exchanged some Atari floppies and get a Powerbook 5300cs (i have no Atari and really wanted a 5300 instead)

The 5300 wasn't in good shape, hinges were mostly gone, the PSU was having a bad contact (logic board side) and the battery was leaking his acid all over the place.

The good thing is that the 5300 fired almost first time 🙂

Repairing the hinges was done, logic board was removed and some soldering was done to get it booting without tinkering with the PSU...but i never get something good...just average.

On the battery side, i was lucky enough to find 5 minutes from home a brand new unit, still sealed for free 🙂 but the unit never get fully charged :-/

So time to have a look at it, here is the board:

And here is the new Panasonic battery

Oops, one pin is missing from the board, the old battery corroded the pin so hard that it broke away from the connector 🙁

I have no spare, so i have to fix it.

The only thing i have is a paper clip !! so here i go, first thing first i should remove the pins from the board:

Cleaning the board, and soldering the new pin goes next

Everything is back, time to put the 5300 together and give it a try:

Seems to work 🙂 will let the new battery a couple of hours and see what's going on. :?:
