Picked these up on eBay -



8 x 4MB Viking brand (Motorola chips) modules.....got them for a nice price with free shipping. Should make a nice amount of memory for the SE/30.

Just checked my SIMMs with 511000 chips on them -- they're 1 MB indeed. So sorry!

I understand the label as 9- chips (8 bit + parity, unused in Macs) of size -1000, to express one megabit per chip, of 70 ns access time. They will of course work fine on the SE/30, but giving 8 MB only.

This seems like a grossly misrepresented item... you should contact the seller about that.

Yup! It seems that all google searches say that these are in fact 1MB SIMMs... sigh. Hopefully the seller will return them, even though he says no returns. Well... he'd have to.. they were incorrectly described.

I'd like to return them, but to be honest, it might be impossible to find 8 4MB SIMMs for the price I paid for these, and even what I paid for these is cheap.

Yeah you have to watch out for this. Back in the day, people upgraded their machines with 4MB (or larger) simms, and put the original old 1MB simms into the box or package that the 4MB simms came in. Fast forward 20+ years and they come across a package containing what appears to be 4MB simms. The package is labeled but not the simms themselves so they think they stumbled on a long forgotten cache (no pun intended) of memory. Most folks no longer have the original machine to test the memory with either. Always get the numbers off the chips and look them up, regardless what the seller thinks they are.

It is hard to find cheap 4MB 30 pin SIMM chip sets these days. Like anything else on ebay you need to check the picture with what is being described. Sometimes you see a better deal then what is advertised (256MB PC100 SODIMM advertised as 128MB for example) and sometimes it goes the other way like your auction.

Those are actually for converting four 30 pin SIMMs to a single 72 pin SIMM.

If there were such a thing for 30 ->30, you'd have to find another 24 matched Viking SIMMS . . .

. . . and then upgrade your PSU to power them! }🙂

SIMM savers draw much more power (4 SIMMs in place of 1) and they won't fit anyway (all the SIMM slots on a SE30 are in a row and SIMM savers would overlap).

I have used them on a 950 (the SIMM banks are in pairs, 2 rows) to experiment, but they are not worth the effort.

Oh yea they wont fit in the case anyway.

Power wise, no idea. You are limited to 16MB per SIMM slot. When I did run the 4 SIMM savers on a 950 I could swear there was a humming noise (all the other RAM slots were full as well thats 4x4 =16 + 12 = 28 30 pin SIMMs plus a bunch of Nubus cards and drives in there.

I think I have 8 x 16MB 30 pin SIMMs on the shelf waiting for a need to use them, but have run out of spare 4MB SIMMs which are the most usefull anyway.

Oddly enough I kept some 256K SIMMs if I ever want to go slumming, and have a small box of 1MB ones.

Well, I don't think he's going to take them back, and I don't think I want to deal with the eBay and PayPal dispute crap. I'll probably end up keeping them.

On the bright side I did just get 4 x 4MB SIMMs for $12. If I keep the others, I'll just do 4 x 4MB and 4 x 1MB.

Ugh, badly-described eBay items are the worst. I learned the hard way to never bid on anything without a part number I could check on Google...

For what it's worth, MemoryTen has SIMMS in a variety of sizes neatly categorized by compatible system, including the SE/30, for about a dollar a megabyte. Not ultra-cheap, but pretty manageable.

Based on my experience, I have to recommend against MemoryTen (and its subsidiary WeLoveMacs). The price may look right, but their modules (at least what they sent me) are poorly made -- they were a tight fit on the Quadra 700 and simply impossible on other Macs until I filed them a bit 8-o One of the SIMMs eventually failed, but the return postage was not worth it.

However, I gave them a second chance... silly me 😱) I purchased a set of four large (16M) SIMMs for the II/IIx, which need the PAL chip in order to support DRAMs over 1Mb. They were properly advertised in a separate category -- at extra cost, of course. I was informed of a delay while they collected the rest of items in my order, which is OK... but then they send the package and bill my card for two of those SIMMs -- obviously useless without the other two. I email them once and again, until I receive a much later reply:

We apologize for any inconvenience. There were only 2 in stock at the time we shipped. I will update you next week. We will be out of office untilJan. 3, 2012 for New Years Holiday.
This was on Dec 31st. I have sent several emails more, but got no more replies so far. BTW, their stock at the time of purchase was over 4... :'(
