| Xserve G5 Dual 2.3 |
Posted by: bd1308 on 2012-01-19 18:47:18 Found this just perusing the web. Awesome deal. It's still in the box. Never used, bought as a spare.
Picking it up next week.

I bought two last model Xserve's when Apple announced they were going to discontinue them. They're both in the store room sealed in the box.
I'm secretly hoping they're never needed so in 10 years time I can open some BNIB "vintage" hardware.
Probably never happen though. Rare opportunity!

My dual 2.0GHz Xserve has been doing me well for a while. Congrats on your RackMac (3,1)! Are you able to use yours as a desktop ? I also have a Xserve G4 1.0 and that thing gets really irritating...

Posted by: mcdermd on 2012-01-20 11:38:51 No way! That thing is LOUD! Mine is racked in the data center at work.

Posted by: bd1308 on 2012-01-21 10:33:10 How loud is it compared to the other datacenter equipment? The xserve I have (on loan through a customer) is VERY loud, because all of the fans spin at max rpm

Posted by: mcdermd on 2012-01-21 12:34:55 About the same as any other 1U box. Noise is never a design consideration. I think the loudest equipment we have (aside from the AC) is a 14-blade unit. Sounds like a jet turbine when you power it on.
You have to remember, all rack mount equipment is designed to be used in a dedicated machine room, in racks with AC equipment. They are not intended to be used in a normal home or office environment. They're built to stay cool, not be quiet.

Posted by: bd1308 on 2012-01-22 16:19:18 Absolutely. My stack of servers gets occasional use anyway, and nothing I have does much more than just boot up for a bit and run updates.
The production-grade stuff I am setting up is going straight to the datacenter though.

Posted by: bd1308 on 2012-01-27 16:41:37 Got the server today. Brand new, in the box, booted right up to OS X Server 10.4, and with the included key I successfully installed a legitimate OS X Server .
Downloading updates and stuff now....
