XLR8 Daystar G4 upgrade for B&W
Posted by: somorastik on 2012-01-13 01:09:43
Hi,

I have a Rev. 1, B&W G3, and Im looking into buying an XLR8 upgrade.

Its suposed to be very good and outpreform the Sonnet 1Ghz.

Is there any way to overclock this upgrade?

Trough jumpers?

What I came about is this:

Is there any place where I could get it, ehm free?

Thanks

Sonnet upgrades tend to not allow any overclocking whatsoever, even if you adjust the multiplier bus speed etc. on the Mac itself. The XLR8 G4 should be a different story, but don't expect more than a 10% overclock on the unit - you would do this by increasing the multiplier on the G3 motherboard itself, using jumpers.

CPU Director I find tends to be a smaller and better featured cache controlling application than Mach speed control (and it is free). You will also be able to adjust the backside cache speed, although that usually doesn't result in any noticable speed improvement in real-world use.

Hi, thanks for reply, My B&W is up to date with 10.4.11 so I guess I will have to downgrade the system, which will probably mean reinstalling the whole thing.

Since the cpudirector is for 10.4.9...

Don't you need some kind of ROM hack to use a G4 in a B&W too?
