There was a webpage about OS9 stability that I found months ago and it gave a little tutorial on how to increase Finder's memory with ResEdit. I didn't really notice a difference when doing that. However now I'm running OS7.6.1 and I just encountered a weird thing. I was trying to open a control panel for an upgrade CPU and it said that there isn't enough memory to open the control panel. I've got 768MB of ram in the machine so that isn't the case.
Below that though it said that Finder's memory size needs to be increased and it asks me if I want to increase it. Why am I getting this notification? Should I maybe edit it with ResEdit and somehow increase the memory size so I won't get that again?

Nah, you can just increase the memory size by going to "Get Info" and putting in a new memory value for Finder. No RedEdit necessary.
Now, it's hard to say if the Finder memory space was really too small (I find that unlikely) or this was the best way the Mac had to tell you something was wrong when it encountered a situation it has no idea how to handle (kinda like my PCMCIA problem with the 5xx series, an F-line instruction should have nothing to do with a PCMCIA module but its throwing up the best error it could find under the circumstances)

You can't allocate more memory by hitting Get Info, at least you can't in 7.6.1.

You can't allocate more memory by hitting Get Info, at least you can't in 7.6.1. Huh, maybe it isn't possible to do that with Finder. I know it's possible with other applications. I'm guessing it was just throwing up the best error it could come up with to a situation it had no idea how to handle.

The only successful ResEdit hack I did on Finder involved a loophole with At Ease and Hypercard. If At Ease allowed Hypercard, then from within Hypercard (not the slimed down Player version) I could run any apps within Hypercard including those not allowed by At Ease. Â Changing Finder's type to APPL made it behave like an apps and it will run behind At Ease, allowing me unrestricted access to the protected Macintosh.
Belated apologies to that college who couldn't figure out how I changed the library computers to have Spectre and Spectre Supreme available from At Ease when it's not supposed to be available. đŸ˜€

I got another weird one today. It said "An unexpected error occurred because not enough memory is available", then it asks me to close applications/programs. I can't get rid of the message and have to restart at this point.

Huh. I wish I had a good answer for you, but I honestly don't. Maybe one of you RAM modules has gone south?
