eMac

I picked up an eMac today. It has a 1.25GHz G4, 1GB RAM, an 80GB hard drive, and a wireless card. The keyboard isn't a perfect match, but it's an Apple ProKeyboard (black key model). The mouse is a two-button Lenovo with a wheel.

It's a pretty sweet Mac, but I'm not going to keep it. Instead, it's going to a local family who has a child with special needs. They cannot otherwise afford a computer for him, so this one will be headed his way in the next few weeks. This placement is part of an outreach effort through my church. An iMac G3 was placed last year in a similar home.

I feel every child deserves a computer due to the presence of technology in today's world and its increasing importance in education. For a child with special needs, computers can open new doorways which may have been permanently locked prior to the introduction of technology.

I encourage all of you to consider doing something similar this holiday season. Most of us have enough Macs to call our own, and while many of us are looking for more (old or new), there's no better feeling than knowing you've helped someone who may not have had an opportunity to experience technology become acquainted with it.

(On a side note, transporting eMacs isn't easy. I drive a Honda Civic, which doesn't have the biggest trunk in the world. I had to put the little roly-poly on its side and even with padding, it managed to slide around any time I made a sharp turn.)

Bonus conquest of the day--very tiny USB cable extender. Perfect for a ProMouse to prevent a short near the connector.

Nice work - and even nicer that it's going to a good cause. 🙂

Aww, you are too sweet for donating the eMac to that special needs kid! 🙂

The Mac was delivered today to its new owner. He loves it!!! (I got him hooked on the Craig Hickman freeware classic known as Beautiful Dorena...think of it as a PPC OS X version of the old Kid Pix).

It's nice to see an older Mac going to a good cause. I know there is an article somewhere on Low End Mac by Jeff Adkins about a loaner program he ran for his less fortunate students. As I recall it's a little outdated, but the concept is there.

Yup, they're wonderful machines for kids. I bought one a couple of years ago for my little guys. They love it. The loud fan is a bit annoying, but hasn't been annoying enough for me to take it apart and undervoltage it, or replace it. I upgraded the RAM to 1G and put in a larger HD. I also picked up a gigabit USB ethernet interface for it, and it runs much faster now.

That's why my CRT/iMac/eMac conquests usually ride up front with a seatbelt 🙂 Face down on the seat, a standard three-point lap/sash seatbelt holds them pretty firm.
