I can think of lots of uses for this beyond word processing. Automatically setting up NetBSD comes to mind...

Ah the AlphaSmart. They're actually not that rare (in the US market at least - I think they must have been rolled out to K-12 education at some point) and there are a few different models to choose from. The king of the range (IIRC) is the AlphaSmart Dana, which runs PalmOS on a decent sized graphical LCD while retaining the full keyboard - a bit like an eMate.

I can't keep count of how many I have seen used while I was in school (even highschool!!).
