| 6400 mobo in 5200 |

Will it work, I'm dumping one of the 6400's and would like to beef up the 5200, looks as if it should fit but I don't want to fry it.

I've put a 5200 motherboard into a LC580 case. If the connectors align and connect, then it should work without any problems. Actually, I recall my dad putting a 6400 motherboard into a 5400 case, which is exactly the same as the 5200.

I don't believe it will work but it won't hurt either to try. The 6400 MB needs 3.3 volts which the 5200 doesn't supply. The 6500 MB will work though as the MB has the built-in circuitry to convert 5volt to 3.3.
You could add a 3.3 volt regulator to take care of that or just pick up a 6500 mb

I guess its because of chips manufactured in a smaller die size on the 6400/6500 that need less power.

I believe its actually because the machine has a PCI bus. Either way, you can put a x400 or x500 mobo in the 5200 without requiring a 3.3v regulator, so long as you don't install any PCI cards or a G3 upgrade. However once you install one or the other, you'll need the regulator.
