400K external drive for $15 bucks

Have you ever scored something so low on eBay you feel like you ripped 'em off? Well, I felt like that the minute I scored this 400K drive for $15 bucks. The pictures looked a little more forgiving than the real thing. It just arrived in the mail and boy is this thing filthy! The grey discoloration wasn't that visible in the pics.

Here's a pic of it next to another drive that I cleaned up so you can get a sense of the weird discoloration.

Filthy!

It's weird, at first I thought it might have been painted grey at some point. But there is no sign of paint in places that UV light didn't reach. (Like the bottom.) So I don't think it's paint. It must be some kind of discoloration. I've never seen old plastic go grey.

The inside of the drive is pretty clean. So I'm hopeful that the drive actually works. I'll dip it in some Oxy/peroxide tomorrow and see how it goes.

Hopefully I can get it looking good-as-new.

OK, looks like it's paint after all. I let is soak in some hot water for a few hours and the paint started coming off with a sponge.

It'll need a little more work to get the paint out of all the nooks and crannies, but I think it'll look as good as new when I'm done. The color underneath is perfect. I wonder why the previous owner thought to paint it grey.
