B&W G3 IDE Issues
Posted by: theos911 on 2011-07-20 07:00:25
I recently got a B&W Powermac G3 400 Rev.2 w/768mb of RAM for 25$. It had several issues, mostly relating to its SCSI disk failing and the IDE disk I was trying to use also being dead. It came with its original 8.6 restore disc; and using that I now have a clean install on a 40gb IDE drive on the ATA/33 channel. When I get a set of Tiger CD's I'm going to try putting that on it.

The Issue: It won't accept two devices on the 16.7 channel. If I have both the CD drive AND the Zip drive connected on the same channel(as they are supposed to be) it refuses to boot. After chiming it will show a gray screen and then a folder with a ? and is unresponsive to a reset from the power button. (Meaning to turn it off, I must pull the plug) Has anyone had this issue or know what may be causing it?

Make sure the drives are set to cable select so there are no conflicts (or manualy set one to master and one to slave).

I recall one of my B&W systems (modified to G4 ZIF) had issues something like that and it was tracked down to a bad IDE cable.

It is working now. The original cable is fine. I had to switch the jumpers from their factory defaults of CD as master and zip as Slave to the opposite.(CD-Slave, Zip-Master) It now recognizes both perfectly fine.

Also, for those who are curious, the drive is a Sony CD-R/RW Model # CRX140E.

(CD-Slave, Zip-Master)
Please note: This will likely leave you unable to boot from CD.
