What his laptop does, I'm sure my eMac can do better. I plug in the USB adapter, pair it to his phone, dial, and then...! Nothing! I try messing with the settings and can't seem to get this working.
His phone is a Samsung SGH-A77. I can move data and whatnot on his phone from my Mac, but no Internet... Windows 7 preconfigured everything, so there's no looking at the settings to try and mirror it in a Mac happy way.
It's an AT&T phone with unlimited Internet access. I kept the username and password blank since I have no clue what it should be, the GPRS CID String is set to *99# which I heard was a "universal" string, and the modem script is set to Apple External 56k Modem (v.90) which I know is incorrect.
I've searched for the proper script with no luck, and if I have to write one, how in the world would I go about doing that? My programming skills are terrible, and I'm still a newbie with Macs...
I would like to get my eMac on the Internet. It would make life so much easier. So, anyone know anything about how I can get this connected? The eMac is running OS X 10.4.11
| Posted by: khmann on 2011-07-12 20:23:44 I think the Mac would need to detect the phone as a USB modem, not a mass-storage device. Probably a menu setting on the phone. Also check the APN for tethering is correct on the phone. I have heard carriers can disable USB tethering in the network, but I don't know how they detect when it is happening.
Good luck! Maybe try Straight USB?
| Posted by: notcrazy_iminsane on 2011-07-13 12:14:05 I don't have a USB cable for the phone....
But I managed to get it working 🙂 As a matter of fact, I'm making this post from my eMac.
Turns out it was the wrong script and the connection settings. taniwah.org.uk has tons of scripts. I used the Generic 3G Script (Generic 3G CID1), set the Account name to WAP@CINGULARGPRS.COM, Telephone Number to wap.cingular, and Password to CINGULAR1.
And when setting up the device, the GPRS CID String had to be left blank.
Oh how happy I am to have internet that isn't dial-up
