| 2.0 DC G5 -> 1.8 DP G5 Case Swap? |
Posted by: lastmile77 on 2011-04-16 21:38:52 Does anybody know if its possible to swap the guts of a 2.0 GHz dual-core/PCIe G5 into the case from a 1.8 GHz dual-processor/PCI-X? I have both on the way from ebay. I bought the 1.8 first since its supposed to be in neat mint shape with airport extreme, bluetooth, keyboard, and mouse. Then I saw what looked to be a pretty good deal on a 2.0 GHz dual-core model though the case did have some marks. Given the complexity of even the air-cooled G5s I'm doubting this is practical. I'm not going to get into hacking anything up.

So you would have to do some hacking there, at the very least. Also, the DC models have the bluetooth/airport antennas built in instead of external antenna connectors.
Other than those obvious differences, I don't know if the rest would work. Let us know how it goes if you try it.

Considering taking apart a G5 case is not a trivial matter (I'd put it as the worst ever desktop Mac to completely tear down), those "marks" in the better G5 had better buff right out 🙂

Considering taking apart a G5 case is not a trivial matter I concur with that statement. After examining a battered G5 case I partially disassembled, it probably would be possible to totally disassemble the case and swap the rear panel to get the proper port alignment, but not something for the faint of heart to attempt.

Not that I'm recommending that you try the swap, mind you.
