Performa 6200CD found - any maintenance?
Posted by: gubbish on 2011-04-07 19:37:30
Hi All,

I recently got a Performa 6200CD that someone was giving away on freecycle.

Other than needing a new hard drive (former owner removed theirs), it seems to work fine.

Is there any important maintenance that would need to be done on this computer? Batteries, capacitors, etc?

Seems to work fine now, but wanted to know if I should be removing any internal batteries or anything like that. Thanks!

You should always remove the PRAM battery upon receiving an old modular computer just to avoid potential leaks, etc., which could destroy the motherboard.

Probably should check the caps too to see if any are bulging or if anything is out of the ordinary.

Caps are an unlikely problem with computers that new. Usually the "black box" (as I can them) PRAM batteries that the mid-90's Performas use don't leak. However, by now it's most certainly dead.

If you want to make a quick PRAM batt, just cut off the wire + connector from the PRAM batt and then connect the ends to 3 AA or AAA batteries in series (red wire goes to positive end). Wrap it in some tape, plug it in and there you go!

The Performa 6200 is one of those 5xxx/6xxx models that may have a faulty CPU or Cache, which can cause random system freezing. There's an Apple utility that can check if your system is affected:
