| 733mhz in G4 QS 2002 |
Posted by: theos911 on 2011-03-23 15:19:07 I recently had a g4 quicksilver 2002 die on me. I thought it was the cpu, so I bought a 733 mhz on ebay for 15$. I'm still getting the same issue, and have ordered a new logic board. My question is if that 733mhz is compatible with the 2002. I hadn't realized this possible incompatibility before I bought it.
*I checked and they have the same L2 cache.
I just wanted to insure that my issue isn't still present b/c of an incompatible cpu(though seeing as I bought before I researched I guess it doesn't matter much)

Posted by: Unknown_K on 2011-03-23 19:21:41 The 733 (QS2001 CPU) has no cache (like the 800 in the 2002), they were the low end CPU's.
Why do you think it is the CPU that died? Most of these systems have Power Supply issues.

Posted by: FlyingToaster on 2011-03-23 20:24:46 I thought mine was shot, held down the little button for 15 sec on the logic board and bam! |) worked. Did you try that already? probably did..

Posted by: theos911 on 2011-03-24 03:04:25 I think it is the cpu b/c it started smoking and sparks underneath itself and the logic board. Also one core warms up and the other does not(it was a dual). However, since a new cpu didn't fix it; I'm guessing it is the logicboard, so I've ordered a new one for 15$(<-GOOD DEAL) I'm also going in order of cost to replace: Cpu 15$, Logicboard 15$, PSU 219$
Yah, I've tried that, about 4 times.

Posted by: theos911 on 2011-04-02 08:17:21 New logic board did nothing. I'm now looking for a new PSU. /sigh

Posted by: Unknown_K on 2011-04-02 10:45:13 Those are expensive too.

Those are expensive too. Tell me about it....

Posted by: Unknown_K on 2011-04-02 13:00:59 You are better off getting a complete running QS then looking for a power supply. I have two QS's mostly because I want a spare for when my main one blows up. Propreitary power supplies suck, many otherwise working G4 towers will end up recycled because of the hard to find and pricey power supplies.

Posted by: theos911 on 2011-04-17 04:58:52 I got a PSU on ebay for a total of 36$ Wish me luck that it works 🙂

Posted by: theos911 on 2011-04-26 03:47:12 Well, the new psu works no different than the old one. So, with a new cpu, logic board, and psu I can't think of what else could be broken.

Posted by: theos911 on 2011-04-26 17:04:24 :scrambled: Alright, I'm lost.
It has a new logicboard, cpu, and psu. I've tried multiple ram sticks and removing the video card. I've tried with and without the hdd and the optical drives. I've tried resetting the pmu about 10 different times using 10 different methods. The new battery that came with the new logicboard was dead. I tried the old one(which still has some charge) and hotwiring 2 AA's, both to no avail.
What else even is there to possibly be broken?
Some info: Hit the power button button and it lights up then fades, red light on mobo stays lit, some fans spin slowly or spin up and down, no hdd activity.

Posted by: MacJunky on 2011-04-26 17:38:35 And you did try to boot it with absolutely nothing other than the power cable plugged in(even PATA gets unplugged at the mobo)? Every card removed?(even RAM, but not CPU, that stays in 😛 )
|
Posted by: theos911 on 2011-04-26 18:12:02 Everything, pata, airport(or not, looks to small), video card, ram
All out and still nothing. Only thing connected is psu, cpu, and the front analog board.
My "a certain eBay seller is about to deal with a very displeased customer" sense is tingling. :sadmac:
A question: What should this unit do with no cpu installed? In regards to lights and such?
|
Posted by: mcdermd on 2011-04-27 16:46:35 With no CPU installed, the power light should illuminate as long as your finger is on it. No lights on the logic board, no fans.
With a bad or mismatched CPU, the power light should illuminate, the logic board LED should light and the fans should come on. It may or may not give a single beep tone.
The last thing you haven't replaced is the front panel switch. They do go bad.
|
Posted by: theos911 on 2011-04-28 03:12:46 Hmmm, mine is a conglomerate of those. Light illuminates as long as I hit it. The red mobo light does come on. Sometimes the fans spin a little bit, sometimes they don't. No beeping.
I bought a new PMU battery yesterday, maybe it will help(/doubt it)
Back the original point of the thread: Is it possible/likely that the 733mhz from a the Quicksilver '01 IS NOT compatible with the '02?
|
Posted by: mcdermd on 2011-04-28 08:08:02 Simply pulling the battery should have the same effect as replacing it in regard to booting the machine. It's the "magic" way of reviving "dead" G4 Powermacs.
|
Posted by: MacJunky on 2011-04-28 13:33:33 It was the MDD that broke compatibility, not the QS. You can use a CPU from a Sawtooth/GBE in a DA or QS even, but the bus speed will automatically be reduced.
|
Posted by: mcdermd on 2011-04-28 15:04:33 I get an error beep if I try to use a Sawtooth single 400MHz in a 2002 Quicksilver. Don't quote me but I think only the DA and QS would be interchangeable.
|
Posted by: waynestewart on 2011-04-28 15:56:06 Did you change the resistor settings when trying the Sawtooth CPU? If not then you'd be trying to run the400mhz processor at 533mhz which it likely won't do
