| Getting Debian 6, 2.6.32-5 kernel to run on Quadra 605. |
Posted by: bahkyp on 2011-02-16 21:38:37 I recently got Linux (Debian 6.0 sid) running from the command line on a Quadra 605.
A number of other people got the parts together, but I wrote up the method, and worked out the install using a ramdisk.
I have a page for links to software and the complete writeup here. http://mich431.net/m68k.html This is basically an announcement of that page.
And heres some pictures.

Posted by: MidnightCommando on 2011-02-19 06:53:39 Thanks, this is awesome! I'll probably try to set this up if System 7.6.1 keeps bending me over...
Do you know which Ethernet LC PDS cards are supported? (I'm not averse to recompiling kernels, obviously)
Also do you know if xf68 has been working at all? I'd love to use a q605 as a thin X client... :\

Do you know which Ethernet LC PDS cards are supported? (I'm not averse to recompiling kernels, obviously) My experience has been, the later the year on the card and the more apple the better, early cards were buggy in their implementation of networking. The 605 has a apple 820-0443-e from 1993. This then goes into a aaui <-> 10bT transceiver. I'ld assume that if 7.6.1 doesn't need a special driver loaded you should be fine. I have had Farralon and Asante cards that worked under linux.
Also do you know if xf68 has been working at all? I'd love to use a q605 as a thin X client... :\ No. I'll try and get an X working.
I'd love to use a q605 as a thin X client... :\ You'll need a FPU upgrade 🙁 The quadra 605 I have has an Q610 cpu in it.

Also do you know if xf68 has been working at all? I'd love to use a q605 as a thin X client... :\ No. I'll try and get an X working. The libraries have broken dependencies. 🙁 And all seem to be compiled in 2008
But remember its only been a little while since the gcc4.4 and kernel have been available. :b&w:

Posted by: ClassicHasClass on 2011-02-21 21:54:18 Nice work. My Q605 has run NetBSD for awhile too, but, like yours, with a full '040. The LC is just too problematic even with soft-float builds.

Meh, X11 is just a massive pile of broken in general. 🙂 Mostly because of gcc < 4 , the 2.6.37 kernel seems to be compiling quite well, so think the other sources will have similar improvements.
