| Macintosh 512K in carrying bag | |
Posted by: mactjaap on 2011-02-12 04:30:17 A perfect catch this week! A 512K, unmodified. In an Apple carrying bag and with a Macintosh External Disk Drive (M0130). Unfortunatly the Mac inner drive was totally stuck. There was a disk in it and even pushing with a paperclip did do the trick…. I removed the drive and de-greased it and lubricated it again with a very little Teflon spray. There was more movement in the drive but not really like it should. I degreased it even more and added some more Teflon. Then I heated the metal parts with a hair dryer…now the movement was OK. The disk stuck in the drive was an official Mac System disk. System 2.0 and Finder 4.1, English 8690-5003-C . The external drive was working but had to be cleaned and lubricated again too. A real bonus is the carrying bag. Complete with Apple logo and original address label with on the back in red Macintosh.  More pictures at my own web site: http://macintosh.vanegten.com/?p=247 | |

What gives?I have the exact same canvas bag for the compact Macs (the only thing I am missing is the red Macintosh label). I think they changed the design sometime in the late 80s when the SE was released. Either way, these old canvas bags are pretty durable (I use mine everyday at school to carry textbooks, etc.), and I like the soft cloth texture used inside. It's unfortunate that Apple doesn't brand their own bags/carrying cases for their current products (although those Incase laptop protectors that everyone has for their MBP are pretty good, too. Their knapsacks are crap, however). | |

I remove Apples from any device I recycle before I take it to the donation center and have swapped scratched Apples with good ones on some machines. A thin paperclip should do the trick--just push against the back plate. | |

But how about the sticker on the back and the serial... I'm afraid that Retr0bright will erase this information totaly.... @funkytoad Yes ...it is a great catch. Although they pop up regularly in our Dutch "Craigh List"... I think one in every two months. This one was for sale near my home so that made it easy. I was some disappointed because the disk was really stuck in the drive so I could not test if the inner drive was OK. But on the external drive it booted so I took the change. And luckily I got it cleaned and running again. Other machines like ED, Plus and SE are very regular here in the Netherlands and do not cost much. From around $30 to $75. And even some times for free. See my posting about that! http://68kmla.org/forums/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=15115 Even 128K pop up some times. I bought recently a 128K for $50 which is not to expensive. Machines like a PowerBook 100 are also regular enough and will cost you around $30....although they most times don't work.. as you can see in my posting in the 68K laptop forum... Shipping is expensive to the USA, around $75 and it will take weeks because of extra safety measures. But if I see the ridicules prizes people have to pay on Ebay I think import is an option! | |

I have a bunch of PPC machines I can't get rid of even for free (don't like to throw them out however 🙂) ) But it seems that in South-holland there are a lot of compacts | |
