Boot Slowdown on PB 1400
Posted by: LC_575 on 2011-02-03 19:39:50
I've noticed, as of late, that my PB 1400 spends quite some time on the Happy Mac and Welcome to Mac OS screens (before the extensions parade). Is this more related to extensions or just a slow system (namely the HD - still haven't figured out what the IBM's drive's RPM is, bt it's probably low) in general?

OS 8.6

64MB RAM

166 PowerPC 603EV

1.2 GB free HD space

RAM Doubler Installed

Password Protection ON.

Turn off memory test at startup (this is before the "Welcome to Macintosh" screen and happy mac). I think you hold down option + control when double clicking the Memory control panel.

Disable useless extensions - those for CD, networking, even control panels if not needed

And yes, the stock HD is dog slow so anything will improve startup speeds!

actually, it's command-option, and tests are off already.

Hmmm....

High Speed Compact Flash time!

Have you compared the time with extensions off (hold down shift) yet?

Install Startup Doubler (it's now freeware). On slow drives it makes a big difference.

Have it already.
