Just found a PowerMac 6100/60

Posted by: quantumii on 2011-01-28 05:48:04 I just found this mac while I was throwing away some old boxes. Long live the e-Waste bins in large office buildings! It still has its original 250MB HDD and the SCSI CD-ROM. Usually HDD's are removed from old stuff when thrown away, so I guess I got lucky with this one. It powers on to the cool "Clock chime", so apparently it works fine. Too bad the plastic is a bit damaged over the CD-ROM (See pic) I have no monitor for it yet, so I will need to find an adapter which allows me to use VGA.

I bought mine for $10 from a yard sale and it came with an imagewriter II, Apple 13" monitor, keyboard, mouse, 2 zip disks, and a bunch of software. It has 76MB of ram, an 8x CD-ROM, an upgraded HDD(1.2GB), and came with the adapter. It was an awesome find for me at the time, as it was the first mac I had paid for(My first mac was a 128k given to me by my dad, and the second one was a Mac Performa 6360) I currently use my 6100/60 for System 7 games and installing stuff to my LC III and my Color Classic. They are really great machines. :beige:

Posted by: Unknown_K on 2011-01-31 19:56:17 I think the part number is Apple 590-0796-A HDi45 male to DB15 Female, purchased one for my second 6100 back in November 2010 from an ebay seller Brokeroftreasures for $3.41 shipped. Seller seemed to have a few but nothing listed currently. You would need a common Applevideo to VGA adapter also.

Posted by: IIfx on 2011-01-31 20:01:45 Just a word of caution, these boxes like to overheat. Check the heatsink paste on the 601, mine dried out and fried the mac. :/

I've had it since about 2002 and its served many uses for me including a 24/7 localtalk adapter for my LaserWriter for about 2 years straight. Now, it doesn't see any use, but maybe I could do something with it again if I could get a DOS Compatibility Card for it.

Posted by: quantumii on 2011-02-01 00:27:27 Mr. beachycove has come to the rescue, and has now shipped me a new CD-bezel, the required video adapters and some other cool stuff. Huge thanks to him for providing me with this!! When I get the parts I will disassemble and clean the whole machine, and also check the cooling paste on the CPU. On a side note: I also found an empty G4 Cube case as well as the power supply. I wonder who removed the contents. Man was I annoyed when I saw that the case was empyt!

Posted by: quantumii on 2011-02-02 00:08:43 I always pick up stuff with the apple logo, regardless of the condition. It is now safely stored in my storage room at work. 🙂 One day I will probably find another without a PSU or with a wasted case, and then I will be prepared!

Posted by: kite210 on 2011-02-02 00:35:56 The 2 Problems with mine are that the CD bezel is missing, and that both of the plastic clips on the back were snapped off. Some advice is to be very careful with the tabs, as they are pretty fragile and can snap off easily, also the metal shielding on the lid can easily come off as well.

Posted by: quantumii on 2011-02-28 06:41:55 Update: I got the parts I needed from beachycove (Thanks!!!!) and booted the machine with a generic VGA monitor connected. It chimes, but goes no further. No video output (The CRT remains in standby) I have fiddled around with the DIP-switch on the Mac-to-VGA adapter, but it does not make a difference. Any clue on where I should start? RAM maybe?
