| Running a BBS on Classic Mac OS? |
Posted by: Tempest on 2011-01-04 10:26:12 For the past few weeks I've been fiddling around with my IIfx, but I'm starting to wonder if I could put it to better use. I was sort of involved in the Apple II BBS scene (if downloading pirated games can be described as participating) and did Co-SysOP a few PC based BBS in the late 90's, so I got to wondering if a BBS could be run on a classic Mac? My IIfx might be a bit under powered for such a task, but if that's the case I also have a G3 and G4 Cube that could be used. I'd like to stick with the IIfx just for the fun factor though. 🙂
Were there cool Door type games for Mac BBS's? If I went through the trouble of setting up a Mac based BBS would it actually get any visitors (I know BBS's are a niche thing these days so I wouldn't be expecting hundreds of people or anything like that). Has anyone tried to do this sort of thing recently? If so, how did it go?

Posted by: gavo on 2011-01-07 14:16:44 Funnily enough just over the last couple of days I was checking out a few BBS's for laughs and came across this one that is run on a Mac (using Hermes II) and that has file areas with a bunch of other Mac BBS software that you might like to play around with.

Posted by: register on 2011-01-17 14:31:17 How about the FirstClass BBS? An operational free demo server is available (limited number of users online simltaneously), as well as Macintosh and Windows clients are.

Posted by: glf on 2011-01-30 13:57:03 Telefinder was always one of my faves. It does actually have a ANSI back-end, so you are not stuck using the GUI alone, but it's not very full featured that way.
