20th Anniversary Performance

Hi all,

I have some questions about my 20th Anniversary Mac. It has a G3-400MHz upgrade and 128MB of RAM. However, it's horribly slow. I know the HD I have in it isn't the greatest, but it's not all HD-based. For example, SimTower on my PowerBook 3400c (180MHz, 32MB of RAM, OS 9.1) is wayyy faster than the TAM. TAM is running 8.1, but only because I couldn't get 8.6 to take (Installation Tome couldn't be read properly).

The biggest thing seems to be that the TAM has no graphics acceleration, but according to http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=30182 Apple KBase article, it does support it. Am I missing some extensions?

I have tried to do some research with limited results - unfortunately, it seems like I have forgotten more of the classic Mac OS info than I can remember :?:

I would recommend getting ahold of another 8.6 installer disc, or Mac OS 9 and doing a clean install.

Okay, I brought out a trusty old AppleCD 600e drive and installed OS 8.6. That went fine. Things seem much more responsive, which is great, however, Apple System Profiler is showing the machine as having a 250MHz 603ev processor, when a G3-400MHz upgrade is in place. I've never had a processor upgrade card like this before; does it need drivers?

Yep, you need to go to Sonnet's website to download their software, or from here:

download and install Sonnet Metronome 3.0 for Mac

Description: This utility reports processor type, processor speed, bus speed, Level 1 cache size, L2 cache size/speed,

and L3 cache size/speed (displayed only when L3 cache is present on processor upgrade card).

if the card isn't working.......

remove the sonnet

clean the 'golden' contacts with a clean pencil eraser, both sides

replace the card

start up with the shift key down (extensions diabled)

stop the computer

restart

Well, thanks for the help everyone! I got the G3 card to be recognized - had to use a PB3400 to download and transfer some of the installers, as most of them came over corrupted from my MacBook Pro.

Everything seems to be working great - just have to source a 2GB or so HD to replace the 340MB one that is in there now.

340MB? Another reason why your TAM is so painfully slow! I'm happily using a 60GB 5400RPM drive in mine, works a treat - again considerably faster than ~ 2GB drives of the TAM era.

I have a few IDE drives around the 2-6GB area if you want. Just pay shipping. I gotta clean this stuff out. If you give me a zip code, I can ship them to you whenever.

I know =( it's the only working HDD I had that wasn't already in a Powerbook. I'd read in a few places that TAMs can't use drives of greater than 4GB, or they will eventually just die.

I would most likely send via flat-rate, which for the box filled with what drives I can find, would be about $10.95. Let me know if this is ok. Contact me via PM to set this up/transfer money. If I get the money tonight, I might be able to get them in the mail tomorrow, but I can't guarantee that, since we have a snow storm. It's getting pretty bad out, but the next chance I get I would mail them.
