Annoying 475 issue solved
Posted by: MJ313 on 2015-06-19 14:37:36
Both of my 475's had this issue... and I've noticed others have it as well. They are missing the little screw-ins (is there a real name for them?) for the DB-15 cable. A minor annoyance, but annoyance none-the-less.

If you have an LC donor board, you are in luck. You've got 4 screw-ins to use. Just unscrew them... and since they won't screw into the LC475 cause the hole isn't threaded, get yourself a baggie of #4-40 machine screw nuts (12 for a buck or so). Then you are in business. EZ Peezy.

haha - nah-- you are, cause you hooked me up! Everyone should get one of the dougg3 rom's. The blingbling factor is high. 🙂

That and the 33Mhz chip clock make this my badass personal fav 68k.

Hmm, my LC III has this issue, so I might give it a try, at some point.

When I see a PC in the streets, you know, the RAM, HD and sometimes the CPU are stripped. I pull out my little Apple Wrench and go after the port screws in the back. Running low on them now as I fixed a lot of other people's PCs with missing screws. And PCs in the trash is getting hard to find these days.

Yeah, you can get them wholesale online too, but if you are only missing 2-4 and have a board (LC or PC or whatever) to harvest from, that makes life a lot easier and it's cheaper.  Unless you want to get into the resell business for these lol

Just the first example I came up with:

http://www.startech.com/Computer-Parts/System-Build/Fasteners/Metal-Jackscrew-Standoffs-4-40-Pkg-of-50~SCREWNUT4_40

The big concern was the nuts... cause the ones in the LC475 that fall off and go missing are really small. But the ones I picked up at Home Depot, although wider, fit fine.

CC- the cheapie 4/40 nuts fit fine in the LCIII... mine was missing one too so I tested it out for ya 🙂

What is it with LC 475's that I never see them on ebay, craigslist or anywhere?  Loved that machine, and would kinda like to have one, but I just never see them around.

From my experience they have fairly bad issues with cap rot and also were from the Maxell battery era so a lot of them have had boards rendered unsalvagable, or at least beyond easy repair, at a time when they really were not worth saving... They were in buyback centers and hock shops, garage sales for small change or on dumpster piles everywhere a bit over 10 years ago. I've thrown out at least 3 that had badly rotted boards after stripping the PSU's and drives out of them. Unfortunately the one decent working one I had was victim to an exploded battery itself. Ah well... Hindsight is a bish.
