G5 AGP Video Options
Posted by: CelGen on 2015-06-13 10:02:05
I got a dual 2ghz G5 machine here and two different video paths I could take.

Anyways, one card is what I believe is the Nvidia 6800 Ultra (180-10220-0000-A05). The other is ATI's Radeon 9800 Pro (109-A14400-01)

From what I can find, both have 256mb framebuffers. The Nvidia has dual DVI out (I got a matched set of DVI monitors here I could use if I wanted to) and the ATI has a DVI connection, plus an ADC connection (ooooh, I could use my 23" ADC monitor finally!)

What I can't find however is a good comparison of the cards. I can't really choose what monitors I want to use (or if I really want to invest in an ADC adapter) until I can figure out which card will be better for gaming, browsing and editing work.

Hi!

Have you tried a search on barefeats? Don't know if these apply to your needs but…

I have a dual core 2 x 2.3GHz G5 with the stock nvidia 6600 (256MB) that works fine. I don't do any gaming at all but a friend sold me a ATI Radeon X1900 that only works on dual core machines like mine. The short story is that that card or the ATI software gave me several kernels panic per day 🙁 That ATI card worked flawlessly on a Quad G5. Nowadays I am happy with the stock nvidia 6600. Both cards were driving a 30" Apple Cinema Display.

I have a flashed 7800GS AGP in my single G5 1.6ghz machine. The stock 6600 series cards are ok for non gaming (up to 256MB). PCIE cards are harder to come by for the last G5 models.

Those are much better benchmarks for me to work with. Thanks. That answers my questions.

Great to know!  🙂

For the hell of it I changed the fan in the 9800 and threw it in the machine anyways.

It comes. It goes. It doesn't really seem to affect the stability of the machine but yeah, it got cooked. 🙁 I guess I could try a reflow as I got nothing to lose.

🙁

Well I'll be damned. Looks like a simple gun preheat and oven reflow brought it back.

Anyways, after double checking on ADC adapters (I'm not paying $70 for the damn adapter), I'll just have to stick with this board until it gives up again. I guess I'm too attached to this LCD.

Hmmmmm.... might be time to try a reflow on my artefacty Rage128 card.
