PowerMac G3 - First of the Last.
Posted by: PowerPup on 2010-09-05 14:48:55
Yesterday I was given this from a friend's neighbor. 😀

A PowerMac G3 with a MultipleScan 720 Display.

Also got a Epson Stylust Color 600 printer, but the ink was dry, probably going to take that to GoodWill.

It came with manuals and Apple stickers too. 😀

Specs:

Mac OS 8.1 (With system enabler 777)

32MB RAM

233Mhz G3 CPU w/512k L2 cache

4GB HD

Since I plan on playing around with it before deciding whether to keep it or not, I've installed Mac OS 9.2.2 and add 384MB of RAM to make a total of 416MB. Now I just have to decide whether or not to put Panther on it. B-)

I find this Mac to be quite a charmer, its old enough to run Mac OS 8, but new enough to run Mac OS X 10.4 using XPostFacto 4. (10.5 with a G4 upgrade according to Wikipedia.)

One thing I thought interesting was that other than the ram, my PowerMac 6100 with the NewerTech G3 card actually has better specs than it. (250Mhz w/1MB L2 cache.)

The latest thing I've done with the PowerMac G3 is post this topic using Classilla. (Thanks ClassicHasClass!)

Not a bad little box you scored, and I like the price.

Keep in mind that the system bus is higher on the G3 and will be more responsive under OS X. I'd throw a PCI video card in there, preferably one with 32MB of RAM, a G4 ZIF, and a faster IDE controller, possibly a USB card as well.

I have a BeigeG3 MiniTower which I love to death. It has gone from OS 8.6 through OS X.3 and still continues to serve me well.

May yours serve you just as well.

Perhaps, but overclocking the existing CPU and/or installing a replacement is trivial. If you adjust the jumpers, the existing 233 should overclock to 266 and, possibly 300. My own Beige has a 350 chip from a B&W and is overclocked to 400mhz.
