$50 eMac?
Posted by: jkoci on 2010-08-03 13:33:40
I have an opportunity to buy a 1.25 ghz eMac for $50. 512mb ram, 80 gb hard drive, DVD/CDRW. I'm told it works well and is in very good condition. It comes with a mouse and keyboard. Local pickup. Go for it? Thanks.

If it's local you might as well go see if it "works well" and "is in very good condition". I've often found my definition of "works well" and "very good condition" are usually far different from those of the average Joe when it comes to IT.

Sadly that's about the most I'd pay for an eMac these days, so if in good condition (and with Airport card?), go for it 🙂

Back when it was new and the local Mac Shack had some to sell me, they actually told me not to, that they broke a lot. If it's anything like the iMac DV, I think the darned things probably just run too hot. But for $50, if you like it, what the heck. If you can keep it cooler or simply don't use it a lot, this may be a non-issue.

I think it was the early models that were running hot. I'm fairly certain that the later models fixed that (like the 1.25ghz).

On a side note, I've been going through a bunch of iMac DV era and eMacs and preparing them for donation. No dud eMacs (yet, out of 4) and only 2 bad, possibly 3, iMac G3s from a lot of about 20.

For the age of both I think that's pretty good.

Go for it!

That model eMac had a history of bad caps. look at the caps in the memory compartment before you buy it.

After some research I decided to pass on it. I'm more into finding a later model G4 tower. However after using Ubuntu I have to say that the Sony RX860 I'm running it on has impressed me. I may be on the lookout for a more modern PC tower to run Ubuntu on instead.

I would rather have a slower tower then the faster eMac. Still for $50 (if it works 100%) its not too bad.
