| G3 b&w internet connection issues |
Posted by: Masterjedi73 on 2010-08-01 16:51:34 Hi everyone.
I got a g3 today, rev. 2 300 MHz from a school. I can't get it to connect to the Internet. Any ideas? It's running OS 8.6.
I don't think the cd drive works either. Is there a way to update the os without the cd drive?
Thanks for any help.

Posted by: Masterjedi73 on 2010-08-01 17:08:59 Nevermind on the Internet. The extensions folder was misplaced. Still need answers on the other question though.

Posted by: Bunsen on 2010-08-02 02:06:33 You should be able to automagically update the OS online, once it's online. What makes you say the CD drive is out?
My suggestion would be to do a clean install of 8.6, or preferably 9.2.2. How much RAM is it packing?

Posted by: Masterjedi73 on 2010-08-02 06:02:24 Where would I go to update the os online? I'm very unfamiliar with classic. The last I used was system 6. Lol
The cd drive works. I believe it's packing 128 mb of ram.

Posted by: Bunsen on 2010-08-02 07:14:39 A clean install of 9.anything should automagically update to 9.2.2 after a few rounds of Software Update/reboot/Software Update. IDK id SU is included with 8.6, but it won't update you to 9.x anyway. 9 was a paid upgrade.
Look in Control Panels for Software Update.
IMHO the best thing you can do with that machine is upgrade the RAM as much as you can afford and install OS X 10.3. Also investigate overclocking the CPU and/or picking up a cheap faster G3 ZIF from IC-China on ebay.

Posted by: Masterjedi73 on 2010-08-02 10:38:52 Well....i was upgrading to 9.0 and then the power went out! Now I can't boot anything. It won't boot from the CD either, including from open firmware. It STARTS to boot from it, but then I get a flashing floppy disk with a question mark.
If I don't put a cd in, I get a folder with a question mark and the finder icon (alternating).
help?

Posted by: Bunsen on 2010-08-02 11:48:42 That sounds ... not good. 8-o
Do you have any other Macs that take IDE/ATA drives? All I can suggest is re-formatting the drive on another machine and reinstalling the OS there (select Custom-For any Mac) then moving it back to the B&W

Posted by: Masterjedi73 on 2010-08-02 18:41:55 I'll try that tomorrow. They all have leopard so I'll have to install an earlier system on them.
I have a set of bootable OSX CDs (10.0) and they work because I tried them on my iBook Clamshell to be sure....but the B&W still won't see them. I really hope I'm just missing something.
any ideas?

Posted by: Masterjedi73 on 2010-08-03 09:44:40 Can i install the os on a g4 and then just move the hard drive to the g3? ...or is the install machine specific?

Posted by: Masterjedi73 on 2010-08-05 18:43:18 I fixed it! It was a bad ram stick. Lol
Thanks for your help.
