iMac G5 conversion?
Posted by: zerotypeq on 2010-07-01 14:31:37
Well, I'm just tossing the idea around in my head (maybe this belongs in mods more?), but I can't find any info on somebody doing an ATX conversion of a G5 iMac. I seem to recall finding some stuff about using an ATX PSU, but not a case conversion. I also seem to have trouble finding the dimensions of the actual board. The reason I'm wanting to do this is I don't really own any PPC macs any more, but I'd still like to. At the same time I really wanna get a G5 system as opposed to a G4 and I figured if I could find a G5 iMac with a busted screen for cheap this would be a great way to go about it. Not to mention it would have a way better PSU that the iMacs typically seemed to have (I'd also replace the logicboard caps).

I posted this thread on PPCmla:

it was very easy once I found what the wires really were.

mine was perfect except for the PSU, but many have bad logic boards—the caps, (put you say you'd be able to fix that), so all i can say is good luck, and please document the case mod

Thanks osgeld, I might need it I've certainty gotten at least decent at soldering now (I've done a good amount of circuit bends and a few actual repairs) and I should still have your number. I really do appreciate the offer of help btw if you hear of any imac g5s laying around 😛

Also, thanks geeko for that link. Looking to be very informative.

I've gotten a few emails back from where I posted a craigslist ad, but this is the only decent one so far.

"1.8ghz iMac 17" that works Except if you use Sleep it freezes up -

does work just can't use sleep - would sell for $100"

He didn't mention how much ram it has so I need to ask him that, but I'm just wondering if that is a problem caused by needing a recap or something else as a quick google search I couldn't find it definitively pointing towards recap. Also, that is a bit more than I'm looking to spend on this esp since I'm trying to find one with a broken screen as I kind of don't want to just cannibalize a system with a working screen.

Sleep related issues are normally related to the power supply, assuming no caps are bulging or leaking on the logic board. An easy way to check for power supply failures is the search in the logs. You should be looking for "-110" and if any appear they should say something along the lines of SMU Shutdown Cause -110. If you have that log, you have a bad power supply.
