I really cannot believe how much stuff this guy had. His uncle was an Apple Certified something-or-other, and he had TONS of old Macs. I got 2 Portables, 2 SE/30s, a dual floppy SE, an LC II, 2 Mac IIs, a PowerBook 150, a PowerBook 180 (with a smashed screen), a bunch of accessories, and ⦠a BLACK compact Mac. I think it is a Plus, but it could be a 128k or 512k, there do not seem to be any markings on it other than the rainbow apple, but it does not appear to be painted. Sadly none of these work as of now, and the only battery between the two Portables is long dead, but for $30 Iām very happy.
The crazy thing is that this guy still has stuff left (probably 20+ vintage Macs, and a TON of accessories), among them a Performa 575, a few Performa 400s, four Apple IIes, a Mac IIcx, (and I think a IIvx and IIfx), and ten or more compacts, including (I think) another SE/30 or two, and a 512k, and a Plus, and an SE box (and some SEs). Check the trading post for this guy's contact information.
I hope to have pictures soon, but all I have is my iPhone, so they won't be good.
BTW, how do I power on a Portable? I just hit the keyboard, right?
| Posted by: LimeiBook86 on 2010-06-27 07:42:12 Post some photos! I'd love to go take a look to see what he has, but it's a 2 hour drive and you probably picked up the best stuff so far. I emailed him asking what he had left (from the CL ad), I got a sort of odd response. The person was referring to a Jeff and said that they will be going back over there later. I suppose maybe somebody posted the ad for someone else...
Anyway congrats on your conquest! I hope you found some good stuff, would love to see some pics! š
| Posted by: beachycove on 2010-06-27 13:11:18 A black Compact: a MacTV?
| Posted by: geeko on 2010-06-27 16:19:51 no, the black compact is not a mac tv. it has the same structure as a mac plus, but it is entirely black.

that looks similar, but has an obvious paint job, mine looks like it has black plastic.
| Posted by: coius on 2010-06-27 19:53:32 Wow, that paint job on that mac plus looks like utter-crap. And it was a shame they did that to the HDD on the bottom. That's too bad, even if it was severely yellowed, it would still be worth more than if someone painted it pure black (that broke up)
| Posted by: Anonymous Freak on 2010-06-27 20:35:06 To power on the Portable with no battery, you'll need a higher-power adapter than came with it (one from the PB-100-series.) And, yeah, pressing spacebar will do it.

mine looks like it has black plastic. Strange indeed. It may have been vinyl dyed rather than painted - that soaks into the plastic rather than sitting on the surface. If you remove a panel or open it up, is it black on the inside?
Pics, of course, are required š
| Posted by: Paralel on 2010-06-28 09:34:23 If it is black on the inside, and you are feeling a little bold, find a very discreet location and use a very fine edge to see if the color goes all the way through or not.
It would be wild if it turned out to be some kind of really early prototype, development machine, special display model, etc... that no one had ever heard of before.

They might not be so great, they were taken with my Dad's Sony Mavica, a camera so old it uses a floppy for storage.

Well, that was my best group of conquests ever! I really cannot believe how much stuff this guy had. His uncle was an Apple Certified something-or-other, and he had TONS of old Macs. Join the club. Those sorts of people always have the best stuff. I'm lucky to have met a few.

I think it is a Plus, but it could be a 128k or 512k, there do not seem to be any markings on it other than the rainbow apple, but it does not appear to be painted. Definitely a Plus, based on the design of the front panel and the twin MiniDIN ports on the back.
| Posted by: Anonymous Freak on 2010-06-28 21:24:31 It must be the predecessor to the black SE/30 used in The Watchmen. :-D
| Posted by: Bunsen on 2010-06-29 00:27:07 Are you sure that's not a paintjob? There seems to be a chip on the left of the screen surround in the first shot, exposing some native colour plastic underneath. Also, the area where the system info would normally be on the back is painted over - if it was factory, (and not a prototype) I'd expect some white lettering there. Try popping the battery cover at the rear, above the power cord, and tell us what you find.
| Posted by: geeko on 2010-06-29 04:39:53 Inside the battery area is Black, and I see what you are talking about on the screen and the thing on the back. I'm starting to think that this may have just been a dye mod like you proposed earlier, I don't think it is painted b/c the case still has the same texture as a regular mac plus.
