I just picked up an iBook Key Lime - the model with firewire - it's the 366Mhz model with standard 24X CD-ROM drive. I'd like to soup it up and put a DVD drive in there for movie playback - but from what I've read only the final 466Mhz "special edition" supports this.
However, on paper (apart from CPU speeds) the two revisions are exactly the same - both having an 8MB ATI Rage Mobility 128 graphics chipset. Even the model number is the same. I'm betting the 366Mhz CPU can be overclocked to 433/466Mhz - will DVD playback work without issue?
Thanks
JB
| Posted by: Strimkind on 2010-05-14 22:35:10 It will work if you use OS X. It has built-in software dvd support unlike OS 9 where support for DVD video was limited. You can use DVD player or VLC and it should work fine on your iBook after you install the replacement drive.
| Posted by: LCGuy on 2010-05-15 07:49:02 As Strimkind said, it should work fine, the fact that you have a Rage Mobility 128, and not a Rage Pro (like early iBooks) will help quite a lot...I once tried to play a DVD in VLC on my tray load iMac 333 (G3/333, 6MB Rage Pro), and it was almost unwatchable, so don't get your hopes up, but don't give up hope either.
| Posted by: classic on 2011-08-05 02:42:51 I just put a DVD drive into my Indigo Clamshell, I have not overclocked it, but playing DVD's does not work (well)
in OS X. I used a version of VLC appropriate to OS 10.3.9.
This might be because the encoding is done in software and 366mhz just ain't enough hertz.
However, I can report that upon booting into OS 9.2.2 that the Apple DVD player plays them full screen
and without issue 😎
I guess this must be because Apple DVD player software utilises directly the Rage Mobility chip.
+ having 576mb of RAM, probably helped 😉
